The name Pocono comes from the American Indian word "pocohanne" which means stream between the mountains. Generally considered to cover the four counties of, Wayne, Pike, Monroe and Carbon the area was recently cited by the Nature Conservancy, a national organization devoted to land preservation, as one of the top 40 "Last Great Places" in the world worthy of keeping pristine and unspoiled.
Whitetail deer, black bear and wild turkey are abundant. There are 13 state game lands, 6 state parks, 72,000 acre Delaware State Forest, and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area which contains 70,000 acres of natural area along the Delaware River.
There are more than 150 freshwater lakes. Of these 29, representing nearly 12,000 acres of water surface, are stocked with a variety of warm water species of fish. The trout fisherman who comes to the Pocono region can choose from 47 streams that run 249 miles and that are annual stocked with trout. Many of the streams maintain native trout as well. The PA Fish Commission also regularly stocks a dozen lakes in this region with a variety of legal-sized trout.
